- In 1978, Cal graduated
- from high school and was signed by the
- team his father coached for, the Baltimore
- Orioles. During his early career in the minor
- and major leagues, CalΓÇÖs playing time was
- divided between shortstop and third base.
- He was so good at both spots that his
- coaches couldnΓÇÖt decide which should be
- his permanent position. (At 6' 4" tall and 220
- pounds, Cal was considered by some
- baseball experts to be too big to play short-
- stop.) That didnΓÇÖt take away from CalΓÇÖs
- performance at all. In 1982, he was
- named American League Rookie of
- the Year.
